[ it's not the first time Varian has visited Steph since their adventures in murder castle, but he wonders if he'll ever get used to the sheer size of Gotham City.
Big, looming, dirty, dark-- it's nothing like Varian ever experienced in Corona or outside of it, and right now, that's a blessing. He's probably as far from anything resembling a forest as he could be, and not a single building here could be said to resemble a small cottage. It's. Good.
He knows where Steph lives, and intellectually he knows he should be heading there-- either to find her or wait for her, depending on what she might be doing-- but he's still a bit out of breath from how fast he moved out of there. It's not hyperventilating, of course not. It was just... very sudden running. Yes.
Varian is just going to casually lean against this building in Gotham in a dark alley and catch his breath before going to see his favorite person, and everything is Fine! Super fine!
Fiddling with the red scrunchie Veronica gave him is for fun and not a nervous habit also because everything is Fine ]
[ it's been a busy night. it's mostly just been a variety of different types of robberies-- home break-ins, convenience stores, just people mugging others in the street. so, nothing too dangerous, at least to steph's standards.
she's actually in the middle of following one mugger after he ditched his group when she showed up. steph is seated on the roof of a building, watching him run down the sidewalk before taking a sharp turn into an alleyway. she sighs, because of course he'd choose an alley. they always choose alleys, that is the most stereotypical place in gotham to run to. without any ceremony, she leaps down from the roof... to land right on top of him!
and also, in front of varian. ]
Gotcha! [ she looks up. ] Holy crap!
[ hey, bro. here's steph standing on top of a now knocked out stranger. ]
[ there may or may not have been a slight strangled scream from Varian when Steph dropped down, but then he recognizes the outfit and lets out a sigh ]
H-hey, St--[ wait shit secret identities ]--Batgirl. Um. Is this a bad time?
[ he's going to take a step back away from the. body she tackled down. just in case ]
[ at first he was doing just that, the trailing, but then he felt weird just following an unconscious guy being dragged around and he catches up to try and walk beside her. which is probably how she can see when he looks away for a second before answering with a shrug: ]
Oh, yeah. I got tired of hanging around the rest of them. You know how it is. Time wasting shenanigans as usual. I figured I'd rather do those with someone I actually like.
[ hmmm. she does notice the movement, but does not say anything. there are a lot of reasons why varian might get tired of staying in corona and need a scenery change. the most worrying thing is still that he didn't just go to her place; at this point he probably still doesn't know the whole city yet, it'd be easy for him to get lost. ]
Aww. So Hikage, right?
[ it's a joke.
eventually, they will come across a convenience store with... about three other guys tied up in front of it, also knocked out. steph just adds the one they have to the pile. ]
The police should be on their way to collect them.
[ she was actually joking, she doesn't actually care if she orders pancakes at 1am in her costume. she is more concerned about any possible stares that varian might get. ]
[ and off they go! it's okay, if anyone tries to mug them she can protect him and he can say he helped.
thankfully, their destination is pretty close by-- mostly since she picked what she knew was close. it's your average 24/7 diner. not that... varian would know what average is. ]
[ he definitely does not know, which is why he's looking around in wide eyed interest and looking like a fucking tourist ]
They must be good, to get a personal recommendation from the great Stephie. [ he's teasing. maybe. he fiddles with a napkin once they're sitting ] So, what have you been up to? Besides the, uh, night job.
I want Steph to be full Batgirl :/ so

[ she just, steps off the guy before leaning down to pick him up. ]
Just gotta dump my friend here somewhere. Did you just get here?
[ she is curious as to why he's... in a random alley and not her house. ]
no subject
Oh, yeah, I haven't been here that long.
[ however long it takes to have a mild panic attack. not that he had one! ha ha!!! ]
no subject
[ she's going to start walking. it's fine, no one will blink at batgirl dragging an unconscious dude with her while a child trails behind her.
i mean, they might, but they've probably seen weirder. ]
Just wanted to visit?

Oh, yeah. I got tired of hanging around the rest of them. You know how it is. Time wasting shenanigans as usual. I figured I'd rather do those with someone I actually like.
[ which isn't strictly speaking a lie ]

[ he can do jokes. jokes are nice. and then there's a pile of knocked out guys and Varian can't hide a grin ]
What, only four? It's like they don't know they're messing with your city.
[ Steph is so cool..... always...... ]
no subject
[ well, once she's sure that they're not going to get away somehow, that means she can fully pay attention to the fourteen year old here. ]
What do you want to do?
no subject
Anything's fine? I just wanted to see you, so. Sorry for interrupting your night shift.
no subject
[ sort of. she hadn't been almost killed or attacked by someone with superpowers, so it's slow. ]
Are you hungry?
no subject
Um. Sure? But is anything open at this hour?
[ he's never hung out Gotham at night before and doesn't understand the pain of big city restaurants ]
no subject
[ she pauses. ]
I should potentially change first.
[ unless he wants to go into a diner with batgirl. ]
no subject
[ it's. both a joke and a legit question. he doesn't know ]
no subject
[ like, batman doesn't eat? probably? has anyone seen batman and food together in the same room. ]
no subject
Oh. Then I guess you should change?
no subject
I'll be right back.
[ she's. going to a roof. ]
no subject
Also implying Varian isn't getting stared at for being a steampunk cosplayer anyway tbh ]
I'll... wait down here?
[ at least he is not in an alley ]
no subject
but it doesn't take long for her to join him in civilian clothes. ]
Varian!
no subject
Stephie! Hey.
[ he doesn't say again because clearly. This is subtle ]
no subject
Thanks for meeting me. [ at. the middle of the night. ] Shall we?
no subject
Oh, yeah, sure, um, lead the way?
[ he has no idea where they are ]

I personally recommend their pancakes.
