[It probably catches Taka's attention at first because a) it's music. It's down one of the school hallways, one of the hallways of the arts building, a room near the far end. Music. The door is shut, so it's muffled, but it's there, and if Taka is curious enough to get close... then b) it's Uribos.
But the room isn't any kind of music room. It belongs to the dance studio; the wide-open, floorboard room peppered with stereo, and a wall-to-wall mirror, and two poles (look), and a ballet bar.
Taka is going to have to open the door, however, if he wants to know why Uribos is playing in full surround sound. Opening it a crack shouldn't hurt? The music is loud.]
but taka follows the sound, because of course he does. if he were someone else, he'd probably be more shy about this? he doesn't usually hang around this part of the school because he has no interest in it, but... well. good timing.
he opens the door. not all the way, but enough that he can get a good look inside it to see what's going on. ]
[Listen, the poles in the back, and they are NOT being used. It's fine.
The music is louder when Taka opens the door, naturally. The sound isn't painful, but it's clear it's being used as dance music which--seeing who it is, seeing them, seeing what they're doing.
Maybe Uribos isn't exactly appropriate music for ballet.
It's happening regardless. Somehow, even with ballet, it's not hard to keep a rhythm to Uribos. Yuri isn't in formal ballet slippers, but he's in a stiff pair of training ones and everything is irritatingly all black. He doesn't notice the door open while in the middle of a spinning releve, though the fall into fourth position at the end is facing the mirrors--and the door. He stops, chest heaving and face red.]
Unless the school is on fire, [loud, over the music] I don't give a shit.
taka doesn't reply, instead just entering the room fully and shutting the door behind him. he looks around, trying to figure out where the music is coming from until he spots the sound system. he makes a beeline straight for it.
is it a cd? or is it connected to a phone? he wants to know if this is the only song this guy has or if he actually knows who the band is and it seems like he is
just going to be physically nosey about it instead of just asking like a normal person ]
Lowering his arms, he watches Taka just zoom in and toward the stereo. Unfortunately, nothing can be found there except the volume. Okay. Weird. He heads toward the mirrors where there's a folded pile of clothes, neatly tucked beside a studded black backpack, a tiger-striped water bottle, and a phone.
First, he takes his time having some water while Taka is nosing about, but then he bends straight over at the waist and gets the phone. The music pauses after he stands back up. Ah. Bluetooth. He opens his mouth, ready to be sassy, but--
--he finally gets a more focused look at Taka. HELLO? His eyes well up. He stands there like an idiot, staring.]
Your outfit!! [His accent is so heavy, but his Japanese isn't too bad.] And your hair... is... so... cool!
[Raising his phone come, Yuri wanders closer to Taka. It lets him angle the phone and take a picture of Taka's outfit without getting Taka's face in the shot, just for privacy's sake.
He relaxes, glancing from Taka to the room again.] It’s good strength and balance training for figure skating. I don’t want to practice to some dumbass classical or soft music. I want to practice to something cool.
He gives the other boy a Look like he’s waiting on some kind of undeserved explanation of “that Russian figure skater.” He will HP sprocket your fucking outfit photo and burn it in one of the school trashcans....]
[Really, he doesn't know whether to tell Taka to congratulate him or agree with him it was shitty. He waves a hand dismissively and takes another drink from the water bottle tucked into the crook of his arm.]
Whatever. That dumbass Katsudon's Free Skate... My Exhibition was better anyway. [He'll never forgive that, like, .12 difference.] Who the hell are you?
Oh. [Yuri's eyes fall down to his phone for a moment.] Cool. [It sounds genuine, at least. He unlocks the phone and holds it out to Taka, opened to the music and the Uribos playlist. Don't go out of it, or he has a sickeningly cute background photo of him and his grandpa. RIP.]
[punk music but as if played through a garage door in a suburban cul-de-sac]
Seriously? That’s shitty. [Yuri actually looks a little dejected. No more... Uribos? Otabek didn’t fucking—! Despite just singing praises:] ...That bastard didn’t tell me they weren’t doing anything anymore! Damn!
Nn. [Nevermind!! He snatches his phone back so he can furiously smash out a message to one (1) Otabek.] How the hell am I going to do more programs to their songs if they aren’t doing anymore?!

ME TOO
except then he remembers his shirt, and that suddenly makes a lot more sense. so is he actually a fan then...? ]
You know Uribos?
[ he skips over the compliment, mostly because he has no idea how to respond to it so it's easier to go straight to business instead. ]
no subject
Yeah? My friend gave me the music. He's DJing in Shibuya for a while between competitions. I'm going to use one of the songs for my program.
[His brows furrow.] I want to take a picture of your outfit. [He holds up his phone. Give him the Insta picture, Taka.]
no subject
taka wants to ask further, but then yuri asks for a picture and
taka blinks. ]
... sure?
[ this is weird ]
no subject
He grins briefly at it, like he's pleased.] Nice.

he looks around at the room again. ]
Ballet?
no subject
Yeah. Got a problem with it?
[He sounds like he’s about to get defensive because Taka is going to say it’s girly.]
no subject
[ he doesn't sound critical though
like, it's good taste? very good taste. it's still surprising though. ]
no subject
He relaxes, glancing from Taka to the room again.] It’s good strength and balance training for figure skating. I don’t want to practice to some dumbass classical or soft music. I want to practice to something cool.
It’s boring if it isn’t surprising.
[So yay, it worked. He’s pleased.]
no subject
hold on ]
You're that Russian figure skater.
[ that's the extent of taka's knowledge because he does not actually follow the sport ]
no subject
[HE HAS A NAME TAKA!!!

[ TAKA CLEARLY DOES NOT PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS ]

...I won the gold medal at the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona.
[HE HATES IT? He honestly hates it. Such a tiny, insignificant margin. The gold wasn't even worth it wtf!!!]

[ because yuri does
not look too pleased by it ]

Whatever. That dumbass Katsudon's Free Skate... My Exhibition was better anyway. [He'll never forgive that, like, .12 difference.] Who the hell are you?
Some kind of band person?
no subject
[ that's mumbled, and then he shakes his head ]
Uribos is my favorite band.
no subject
RIP.]
Otabek gave me what he had. They sound amazing.
no subject
"light" music club ]
Otabek is the DJ...? He has great taste, I don't meet that many people who know of them.
[ fuckin pretentious shithead ]
... they're not active anymore, so it's best to enjoy the music they have out.

I wonder if he knew.
